LEE members attend the 25th Conference on PRES

Three honorary delegates of the Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering, Mr. Domalanta, Mr. Castro, and Mr. Tomacruz, presented their research works at the 25th Conference on Process Integration for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction – PRES'22. PRES’22 is a conference series that brings together scientists, engineers, and decision-makers, to discuss and innovate solutions and technologies for improved efficiency and sustainability of industrial and regional systems. The conference was organized by the University of Split, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in the city of Split, and the municipality of Bol on the island of Braฤ in the Republic of Croatia. Esteemed chemical engineers from the mentioned institute organized the event with attendees from various Universities such as Bruno University of Technology, Czech Republic, Aalborg University, Denmark, etc.

The conference exhibited various chemical engineering topics to represent the status and outlook of research studies. The topics include Heat Integration and energy saving; Renewable energy and utility systems; Process simulation; Systems and product synthesis; Mathematical optimization; Power systems design and optimization; Circular Economy; Waste and wastewater management, etc. The attendees were able to socialize with other researchers through a social night, networking sessions, and excursions.     

Mr. Domalanta delivered an oral presentation entitled “An Electrochemical-Thermal Multiphysics Model for Lithium Polymer Battery” and a poster presentation titled “Cost Analysis of a Sodium-ion Battery Pack for Energy and Power Applications using Combined Multi-physics and Techno-Economic Modeling,” where the latter received the MDPI – Energies Second Place receiving 50% discount of Special Issue from PRES’22. Mr. Tomacruz discussed his work titled “A Machine Learning-accelerated Density Functional Theory (ML-DFT) Approach for Predicting Atomic Adsorption Energies on Monometallic Transition Metal Surfaces for Electrocatalyst Screening” through an oral presentation and “Techno-economics of “Teal” Hydrogen Production via Combined Steam Methane Reforming and Biomass Gasification” through a poster presentation garnering the second-place best poster the ‘Zdenek Burianec Memorial Award.’ Mr. Castro presented an oral presentation entitled “Multiphysics Modeling of a Low Voltage Acid-Alkaline Electrolyzer” and a poster presentation titled “Energy Density Optimization in a Primary Alkaline Battery using Multiphysics Modeling.”

The National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) conducted a three-part webinar series on the Innovations for Human and Planet Health and Security to promote open innovation and collaboration as a defining factor of socio-economic development. Highly esteemed NAST members of the representative divisions of various fields in science, awardees, and experts were invited to tackle the current innovation ecosystem of the Philippines and the innovative solutions that address food security and climate change. Aimed to promote multidisciplinary discourse and partnerships, the event was participated by researchers, policymakers, government officials, and the general public. Among the prestigious roster of resource speakers was Prof. Joey D. Ocon who delivered his talk on “Next Generation Batteries and Green Hydrogen with Renewables: Opportunities in the Clean Energy Transition” during the third segment of the NAST PHL Innovation Series. Prof. Ocon shared insights on the crucial role of energy storage technologies in the transition to renewable energy sources and the scalability of energy systems that can help satisfy the energy demand in the country. As part of the vertically-integrated R&D agenda of the Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering (LEE), he also introduced water electrolyzer technologies involved in the production of Green Hydrogen. Moreover, the research facilities in LEE such as the CHED-LAKAS funded Hydrogen as Vector for Energy (HyVE) Research Facility and the DOST-NICER funded Advanced Batteries Center, both of which are first of its kind within the country, were highlighted as well as their capabilities and future endeavors. In the area of commercialization, Prof. Ocon discussed the multi-scale approach of the startup Nascent Technologies Corporation and its mission on industrial decarbonization by providing technologies and solutions for various energy storage applications. Through information dissemination in his thematic talk, more innovators and collaborators can come forward in support of the vision of the ongoing projects led by Prof. Ocon and devise integrative innovations that can contribute to the clean energy transition in the Philippines. The three projects under this program focus on innovating different battery chemistries. The ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜…๐˜๐—š๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ท๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜ aims to develop advanced cathode materials for next-generation batteries. The ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—•๐—–๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ท๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜ targets to renew the Edison Battery using advanced cell architecture. ๐—”๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—•-๐—˜๐—จ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ท๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜ pursues to develop advanced lead acid batteries with embedded ultrasonics.
